The Langham Introduces Global Afternoon Tea Tribute in April

Hong Kong, 17 March 2026 – The Langham Hotels and Resorts will launch themed Afternoon Tea sets at select locations around the globe this April to celebrate the release of The Langham Afternoon Tea Book. This publication unveils the recipes behind the hotel's most iconic sweet and savory offerings for the first time, aiming to both delight and inspire guests worldwide.

“Afternoon Tea has been an integral part of The Langham’s offering since our London flagship opened its doors in 1865, becoming the first Grand Hotel to present the experience to the public,” stated Bob van den Oord, CEO of Langham Hospitality Group. “That same spirit guided the creation of The Langham Afternoon Tea Book and now informs this global tribute, which brings selections from the book to life in our hotels and invites guests to share in a tradition that has defined our namesake for generations.”

Published in February 2026 by White Lion Publishing, The Langham Afternoon Tea Book allows readers to recreate many hallmark dishes from The Langham's signature Afternoon Tea experience at home. The book includes beautifully illustrated recipes ranging from classic cucumber sandwiches and fresh scones to exquisite pastry creations. Additionally, a foreword by renowned chef Michel Roux Jr. is included, along with tea-pairing guidance and a section on patisserie basics, enabling readers to grasp the techniques essential to this enduring culinary tradition.

To coincide with the book launch, specific Langham properties will offer themed Afternoon Tea sets inspired by its recipes. These sets will feature one or more book items, supplemented with additional varieties of cakes, sandwiches, and scones. Participating hotels include The Langham in Hong Kong, Shanghai (Xintiandi), Shenzhen, Jakarta, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Chicago, Pasadena, and London.

The concept of Afternoon Tea is deeply rooted in British culture, famously introduced by Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who created this midday ritual featuring tea, sandwiches, cakes, and scones to mitigate extended gaps between meals. This practice soon spread beyond private aristocratic settings to become a cherished social event.

Since its inception at The Langham, London in 1865—the first Grand Hotel in Europe—Afternoon Tea has established itself as a defining feature of the hotel, evolving into a popular gathering point for London society. Over 160 years later, this delightful tradition continues to thrive, enjoyed by guests all around the world.
